Ante Pavelic

Ante Pavelic was the fascist leader of Croatia during World War II which at the time was known as the Independent State of Croatia. Under his leadership, the NDH constituted a Greater Croatia but was forced to make significant territorial concessions to Italy. The brutal regime he led was responsible for genocidal persecution of Serbs, Jews and Romani living in the NDH, including mass murdering several hundred thousand Serbs, and tens of thousands of Jews as well as Roma. After the war he fled to Argentina where he became the victim of an assassination attempt at which point he went to Spain for two years as he died in 1959 of his injuries. He was 70 years old. The character Ante is named after him.
